We are seeking an investigative journalist to cover the gun lobby and other institutions and people that influence the gun violence debate in America. The ideal candidate has proven adept at cultivating sources on a high-profile beat and has a compulsion to regularly file public records requests. It may seem obvious, but we are looking for a reporter who has the tenacity to land big, gripping stories that drive change.

We offer our writers the time and space to dig deep, and the coaching and resources they need along the way. Our partnership model means that Trace reporters get to collaborate with and publish in outlets like The New Yorker, Politico, BuzzFeed, Slate, and The Atlantic.

This position will be based in New York or Washington, D.C.

The Trace is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit media organization based in New York. Our mission is to use public interest journalism to inform a core audience of policymakers, law enforcement officials, researchers, journalists, and concerned citizens on an issue that has become one of the most complex and important in American life, touching on subjects from race and discrimination to terrorism and money in politics.

To apply, please send your resume and a cover letter that includes links to three to five of your strongest stories to [email protected].

Deadline: Wednesday, July 10.

The Trace is committed to diversity and strongly encourages applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ people.
