The Trace is a nonprofit newsroom exclusively dedicated to reporting on our country’s gun violence crisis. We’re looking for a Multimedia Producer with fresh ideas, excellent production skills, proven strategies for reaching younger audiences, and a willingness to grow with the organization as we build out our video presence from the ground up. This is a new role on The Trace’s audience team and reports to the Senior Editor of Audience and Engagement.
The Multimedia Producer will own The Trace’s video presence. They will create both shortform vertical videos and 5-10 minute video essays, and develop The Trace’s video identity on social platforms. This person’s work will accompany the newsroom’s big projects and they will oversee and assist in the creation of shortform videos produced by Trace colleagues. This person is excited about producing videos starring The Trace’s journalists, and isn’t afraid to put themselves on camera, too.
This role will require some evening and breaking news work. The Trace offers comp time for work that takes place outside of regular office hours.
Core responsibilities
- Pitch, script, and produce videos on guns and gun violence in America, experimenting with form and style, based on both newly published stories and The Trace’s archives
- Project manage video components to accompany big editorial projects
- Edit longer videos down to engaging pieces for social media
- Create templates for other team members to produce original shortform vertical videos, and perform quality checks on all video The Trace produces
- Collaborate with the audience team to track video analytics and use data to inform video strategy
- Think creatively to develop and implement strategies to sustainably expand The Trace’s reach via video, balancing the serious topic of gun violence with formats, scripts, and visuals likely to engage audiences
- Assist the audience team in drafting and posting promotional copy for videos, and for other Trace work as needed
- Recruit and collaborate with freelance videographers as needed
Requirements:
- 2-5 years of experience in video production
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
- Creative thinker
- Willingness to experiment

Compensation and benefits:
- $65,000-$80,000 annually, depending on experience and location

This is a remote position. Many of our staffers are based out of our office in Brooklyn, New York, but we also have team members in Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.
