The Trace is hiring a newsletter writer to work full-time starting immediately. About half of The Trace team is based in New York, but this position can be performed remotely from anywhere within the continental United States.

The Trace is the only media outlet dedicated to covering gun violence in the U.S., a crisis that kills an average of 110 people every day and disproportionately harms communities of color. Our journalism creates impact through informative and empathetic storytelling, investigations that produce transparency and accountability, an emphasis on solutions, and collaborations with other newsrooms. For more on our mission, see our About page.

The position

The newsletter writer is responsible for writing The Trace’s newsletter products, currently a daily and weekly newsletter. The newsletter writer will help develop these products to maximize reader engagement and growth. They will also work with Trace staffers to conceptualize and launch new newsletter products. Our newsletters generally include a mix of original reporting and aggregation, but we’re open to experimentation in both form and content.

Additionally, the newsletter writer may collaborate with The Trace’s editors to publish newsletter content on our site. This role may require limited evening and weekend work, particularly in breaking news situations.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • The ability to quickly synthesize complicated ideas into crisp, accessible blurbs
  • A strong news sense and an ability to locate the most important stories
  • Familiarity with the media newsletter landscape
  • Comfort with packaging stories and newsletters, including writing subject lines and headlines, selecting images, and more
  • An eagerness to innovate and to adapt to the needs of our newsletter audiences
  • An interest in conceptualizing and developing editorial products

Experience with the following is not required, but would be helpful in the role:

  • Familiarity with the gun violence beat or the various issues that overlap with it, such as public health, racial justice, courts, policing, and more
  • Familiarity with email service providers (we currently use Mailchimp) and newsletter analytics
  • Working with a distributed team or collaborating across time zones

Compensation and benefits

Salary will vary depending on the candidate and the candidate’s location, but the general range is approximately $60,000 to $85,000. This full-time position includes no-cost medical, dental, and vision insurance; 12 weeks of fully paid family leave; a 401(k) with employer matching; four weeks of vacation time, plus 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and a holiday week in December; professional development resources such as funding to attend conferences; and wellness initiatives.

As noted, around half of of our staffers are based in New York, but we also have team members in Washington, D.C.; Chicago; California; and elsewhere. Employees who work remotely are eligible for a stipend to set up their workspace, or to find a shared workspace with other local Trace employees, if applicable.

At The Trace, we are committed to producing journalism that is equitable and inclusive. We welcome applications from journalists of all experience levels and strongly encourage applications from people of color, women, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people.

We know that all of the attributes and interests listed here won’t apply to all candidates. If you think you’d be a great fit and have skills and qualifications not mentioned in this listing, we encourage you to submit an application and tell us why you’d thrive in the role.
